Dubbed “White Dave” by his older brother (director Ryan Coogler), this aspiring super producer has an affinity for pushing the envelope. Making it his mission to further dismantle the archetype of bling and bullets, he finds allies and peers in left-of-center success stories like Pharrell, Kanye West, Chance The Rapper, Travis $cott and fellow left coast lyricist, Kendrick Lamar.
“I’m not afraid of anything musically, “ he shares. “I want to do it all. In order to do it all, I have to be willing to step outside of my comfort zone. I won’t shy away from a challenge.”
Dave first made a name for himself as a completely self-contained sound machine, pumping out tracks for local artists while producing, engineering, and performing his own material to sold out crowds in his hometown of Richmond, California. Though reflective of the cool vibes abundant in the Bay Area, his eclectic palette and sonically forward approach make it challenging to pin his origins directly to the region. The inability to be labeled musically is an attribute he's readily embraced from the beginning.
In 2012 he offered up the Richland LP, a joint venture with frequent collaborator Cliff Soulo and returned one year later with his 2013 Enjoy mixtape. 2016 will be his Season of the Rich. when his latest project makes its debut with the 25-year-old finding himself with richer beats and truer lyricism.
"I’ve decided who I am, what I’m doing and I’m going after that," he proclaims with confidence. "Within my first two projects, I only made one important statement on one track. On the forthcoming tape, each song is a statement in itself. Every single song is a representation of me. Because I know myself better. Because I know who I am and where I’m going."
